Wreck Fragment, Trusthorpe Foreshore, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire: Tree-ring Analysis of Oak Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on samples obtained from nine timbers that formed an articulated mobile fragment of a wreck that was found on the foreshore at Trusthorpe, near Mablethorpe on the Lincolnshire coast. This analysis produced a single site-chronology, comprising the ring-series from three ribs and one plank of 78 rings spanning the dates AD 1723–1800. The four dated timbers appear likely to be coeval and were felled after AD 1815. However, taking into account the similarity of the dates of the outermost measured heartwood rings and the likely abrasion suffered by the timbers in this mobile fragment, it seems probable that they were felled during the early or mid-nineteenth century, thus indicating the date of the unknown and unlocated parent vessel.
