Telephone House, High Street, Southampton: An investigation of medieval gold threads

Gold threads were recovered from a burial at Southampton’s medieval friary and can be dated to between 1368 and 1558. They were examined using XRF and SEM and were found to be made using gilded silver wound around a silk core.
