THE HULLBRIDGE (ESSEX) SURVEY; RESULTS OF THE PALYNOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION.
Author(s): R G Scaife
The Hullbridge project, established in 1982 has surveyed in detail, the archaeology and sediments of the Essex river estuaries. Over much of the area, an old land surface on which later prehistoric activity took place, was drowned by rising sea level which deposited estuarine clays. This paper gives the results of a pollen study of 5 soil, peat and sediment sequences found in the Blackwater and Crouch river estuaries. These analyses have shown that a mixed deciduous woodland dominated the terrestrial areas of the Hullbridge Basin. This comprised Quercus, Tilia and Corylus. Other arboreal elements were also present (Ulmus, Fraxinus, Fagus). Little evidence for anthropogenic disturbance has been noted. Changes from dry land to brackish water/estuarine conditions are evidenced in the pollen record at all of the sites analysed.
