Shenton Hall, Shenton, Leicestershire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Dovecote

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

Analysis by dendrochronology of nine out of 10 samples obtained from the roof of this dovecote (one sample having insufficient rings for reliable dating) has produced a single site chronology comprising six samples having an overall length of 114 rings. These rings are dated as spanning the years AD 1606–1719. Three of the dated samples retain complete sapwood. In each of these three samples the last measured ring, and thus the felling of the timbers they represent, is dated to AD 1719. The relative position of the heartwood/sapwood boundary on the other dated samples indicates that they are likely to represent timbers felled in AD 1719 as well.
