Bindon Mill and Mill House, Wool, Dorset: Analysis and Assessment of the Buildings and Mill Machinery
Author(s): Alan Stoyel
Bindon Mill and Mill House are situated to the east of the village of Wool, on the south bank of the River Frome, beside the remains of Bindon Abbey. The earliest in-situ part of the building comprises a wall, built of re-used material, probably sourced from the abbey, which formed the east wall of a mill probably dating from the 17th century. This mill was reconstructed on a larger scale in the late 18th century, enlarged in the early 19th century, and remodelled and largely rebuilt in 1893 as a turbine-driven roller mill. The mill house was probably built circa 1700, and was extended in the early 19th century, and again, perhaps fifty years later. For at least the last 80 years of its working life the mill was operated alongside a farm and this dual economy is evident from the outbuildings, most of which date from the second half of the 19th century. The mill closed in 1955, since when it has fallen into disrepair. This report, commissioned for the EH Heritage Protection Team in Bristol, appraises the buildings and mill workings, identifying and ascribing dates to their principal phases, and providing an assessment of their significance.
