EXAMINATION OF TECHNOLOGICAL MATERIAL FROM 1964-66 EXCAVATIONS AT SITE 5756, THETFORD, NORFOLK.

Author(s): P Wilthew

Samples of material of technological significance were identified. Where appropriate they were analysed for major and minor elements using either qualitative X-ray fluorescence or atomic absorption spectroscopy, a quali-tative technique. Substantial evidence in the form of mould and dribbles of metal, for bell founding and bronze casting during the late saxon period (Phase III) was found. Two fragments of crucibles indicated brass and silver melting during the early medieval period (Phase IV). There was evidence for small scale blacksmithing taking place near the site during the Late Saxon and/or later periods. Red lead and calcium carbonate had been used as pigments on three fragments of painted plaster.
