EVIDENCE FOR ANGLIAN METALWORKING FROM WHARRAM PERCY, YORKSHIRE (SITES 94 AND 95)

Author(s): Justine Bayley

The finds include crucibles, moulds, tuyere blocks and vitrified clay hearth lining as well as a small quantity of slag. Parts of at least five crucibles are represented. They are probably all lidded and were used to melt copper alloys containing tin, lead and zinc. A total of fifteen fragments of piece moulds were found, and the decoration on some of them suggests an 8th century AD date for the assemblage.
