St Thomas St, Bristol: examination and analysis of glass and glassworking debris

Author(s): David Dungworth

A selection of glass and glassworking samples from an 18th century glasshouse have been chemically analysed to determine the range of articles made and the raw materials and recipes used. The samples of dark green glass are a high-lime low-alkali glass and analysis of two wine bottles of 18th-century form confirms that they were made on site. The samples of pale blue-green glass were made using a mixture of sand and seaweed ash. This glass was probably used to make crown window glass.
