Bruton Abbey, King’s School, Bruton, Somerset: Report on Geophysical Survey, October 2014

Author(s): Neil Linford

A geophysical survey was conducted over the scheduled area to the north of the railway line over the former Augustinian abbey, at King’s School, Bruton, Somerset. The aim of the work was to expand coverage of a previous, highly successful, trial Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey to help determine the full extent of the site and place results from two recent excavation trenches into the wider context of the former abbey and the C18th Berkley House mansion. A vehicle-towed GPR survey was conducted over an area of 1.1ha that corroborated both the general location of the Berkley House mansion remains identified by the previous survey and suggested a much wider continuation of monastic buildings over the site to east of the scheduled area.
