ORTON MEADOWS, PETERBOROUGH, POLLEN ANALYSIS OF THE OLD LAND SURFACE.

Author(s): R G Scaife

A spot sample taken from the buried land surface underlying a Bronze Age mound was analysed for pollen. The soil, although truncated, was found to contain pollen. This was in a poor state of preservation. The pollen spectrum does, however, indicate that the dominant vegetation which had been growing on or near this site comprised oak, lime and hazel woodland. There is no evidence of agricultural activities although there are indications that the woodland was of open perhaps disturbed character.
