Analysis of the Copper Alloy Residues from the Sturton Foundry in South Petherton, Somerset

Author(s): Eleanor Blakelock

Excavations at South Petherton, Somerset revealed evidence for a cauldron foundry; this is most likely to be the Sturton foundry which was producing domestic vessels from 1630 until 1728. Samples of copper alloy were analysed quantitatively to determine the chemical composition of the alloys being cast and then compared to other post medieval foundry sites. This revealed that leaded antimony bronze objects were being cast at the site.
