Carisbrooke Castle Privy Garden, Isle of Wight: Plant Remains from Evaluations undertaken in 2006, 2008 and 2009

Author(s): Mariangela Vitolo, Gill Campbell

This report presents the results of the analysis of charred plant remains and charcoal from evaluations carried out in 2006 and 2008-9 at Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight (Pr 4992). The results provide information about cereal crop use at a southern English castle. Wheat dominated the medieval contexts, with some oat and traces of barley also found. The only other food plant recorded was pea. A single prehistoric feature produced both hulled and naked barley dated to the middle Bronze Age.
