TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM THE SOLAR AND CHAPEL, ST BRIAVEL'S CASTLE, TINTERN, GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Author(s): Robert Howard, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Thirty-four samples obtained from the timbers of the Chapel and Solar of St Briavel's Castle were analysed by tree-ring dating. This analysis produced a single site chronology consisting of twenty-nine samples, its 231 rings spanning the period AD 1362 - AD 1592. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples strongly suggests that an extensive single phase programme of alteration works took place in both the Chapel and the Solar using timber felled in AD 1592.
