WORCESTER MAGISTRATES COURT, WORCESTER, WORCESTERSHIRE: ARCHAEOMAGNETIC DATING REPORT 2001

Author(s): Paul Linford

Archaeological excavations by Archaeological Investigations Ltd. at Worcester Magistrates Court, Worcester, uncovered the remains of four burnt clay surfaces. The Archaeometry Branch of the English Heritage Centre for Archaeology was requested to carry out archaeomagnetic analysis of orientated samples collected from these features. Two of the features proved not to be datable, the other two gave dates of last firing in the 3rd to 4th centuries AD. The dates were not of particularly high precision owing to the apparent low firing temperature of the samples and the slow movement of the virtual geomagnetic pole during this period.
