TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF ADDITIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL TIMBERS FROM THE AD 1979-84 EXCAVATIONS AT STAUNCH MEADOW, BRANDON, SUFFOLK

Author(s): Ian Tyers

During AD 1979-84 a series of timbers was revealed during excavations at Brandon in Suffolk. The timbers were associated with archaeological features of middle Saxon date. Tree-ring analysis of some parts of the assemblage was undertaken in AD 1986 (Groves and Hillam 1986), which dated some Saxon timbers but also created two shorter undatable site sequences. In AD 2000 a series of timbers were located that had not previously been seen by dendrochronologists which were suitable for analysis. It was hoped these timbers would help date some of the material undated in the original analysis, or provide additional evidence for the period of occupation on the site. Two additional timbers were dated by the new analyses and these indicate activity on the site in the late seventh and early eighth centuries AD. No additional dating evidence was forthcoming from re-examination of the earlier data.
