INVESTIGATION INTO THE TECHNOLOGIES OF EIGHT KEYSTONE GARNET DISC BROOCHES FROM MAISON DIEU MUSEUM, FAVERSHAM, KENT

Author(s): S Rye

X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-radiography were used to examine and analyse eight 7th century AD keystone garnet disc brooches from Maison Dieu Museum. The results of these analyses and the suitability of the techniques were then assessed. The investigations showed the brooches were cast from a silver alloy which was then fire-gilded. Decoration used on the brooches includes silver/sulphur niello (and possibly silver/copper/sulphur niello), 'false plait' filigree, white calcite-rich inlay, beading, notching, punch marks and gold foil.
