Nyetimber Farm Barns, Gay Street, West Chiltington, Near Pulborough, West Sussex: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Dr Martin Bridge, Robert Howard

Analysis of material from the medieval (northern) and post-medieval (southern) barns at Nyetimber resulted in the production of four site chronologies, accounting for 14 of the 22 measured samples. Only one of these site chronologies, NFBASQ04, comprising eight samples from the southern barn only, could be dated, its 143 rings spanning AD 1463– 1605. Interpretation of the sapwood would indicate that all the dated timbers of the southern barn are likely to have been felled in AD 1605–6.
