Church of St Nicholas, Bromham, Wiltshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Roof of the Beauchamp or ‘Bayntun’ Chapel

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard

Tree-ring dating of 34 out of 36 samples obtained from this site has resulted in the production of five site chronologies. Only one of these, site chronology BRMBSQ01, comprising six samples from the lower, earlier, panelled roof can be dated. Site chronology BRMBSQ01 has an overall length of 125 rings, which can be dated as spanning the years AD 1359–1483. Interpretation of the sapwood on these dated samples would indicate that the panelled roof is largely made of timber felled sometime between AD 1486 and AD 1511, a time period which would include the AD 1490s date suggested by the historical evidence.
