THE TREE-RING DATING OF THE GALLERIED BUILDING AND 'DAIRY', 40 BROAD STREET, LEOMINSTER, HEREFORDSHIRE

Author(s): Daniel Miles

Nine samples were taken from a courtyard complex of buildings at 40 Broad Street, Leominster (SO 495 593). Six were from the east range, or 'Galleried Building', and three were from the north range, or 'Dairy'. Both buildings exhibited an unusual internal gallery. All samples from both ranges matched together and were combined to produce a site master of 162 rings, and which was found to span the years AD 1338 - 1499. Five precise felling dates were produced for the east range: one from the spring of AD 1499 and three from the summer of the same year, as well as one from the winter AD 1499/1500, suggesting a construction period during AD 1500. A further precise felling date of a very early spring of AD 1463 was obtained from the north or dairy range, although two other samples from this range produced felling date ranges of AD 1462-4 and AD 1466-95, suggesting a construction date commencing shortly after AD 1466.
