Jackass Lane, Keston, London Borough Of Bromley: Report on Aerial Investigation and Geophysical Survey, January 2017

Author(s): Neil Linford, Paul Linford, Andy Payne, H Winton

The discovery and excavation of a shallow Saxon grave, in Fifty Acre Field, Jackass Lane, part of Fox Hill Farm, Keston, London Borough of Bromley, prompted a wider survey. This included an investigation and mapping from aerial photograph and lidar data as well as ground based caesium magnetometer and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. While evidence for former field boundaries and possible quarry extraction pits were revealed, it proved difficult to confidently identify any magnetic (10.8ha) or GPR (9.1ha) anomalies related to further inhumations or other significant archaeological activity. Attempts to identify significant geophysical anomalies were partially hampered by the response from the near surface geology, a wide scatter of recent iron litter and the presence of numerous in-filled bomb craters. However, a tentative suggestion of more significant activity has been indicated to the south-east of the excavated grave, in an area where other Saxon and early medieval finds have been reported.
