ANALYSIS OF NON-FERROUS TUDOR AND STUART ARTEFACTS FROM SOUTHWARK, LONDON

Author(s): David Dungworth

Excavations from 1986 to 1992 of medieval and post-medieval royal and great houses in Southwark, London recovered large quantities of Tudor and Stuart artefacts. A selection of the non-ferrous artefacts was analysed to determine the range and proportion of alloys in use. Amongst the pewters there appeared to be a slight preference for tin-rich rather than lead-rich alloys. Amongst the copper alloys brass was by far the most common alloy type in use at this time.
