Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Stonepitts Manor, Seal, Kent

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

Analysis of forty samples from this building resulted in the construction of three site sequences. Site sequence KSMASQ01, of 109 rings, containing sixteen samples, spans the period AD 1389-1497. Three samples are from trees felled in AD 1497, with the other samples having a felling range consistent with this felling also. Site sequence KSMASQ05, of 98 rings, contains twelve samples, six of which were felled in AD 1553-73. The other samples have last measured ring dates in the early sixteenth century making it possible they were also felled at this time. Site sequence KSMASQ04, of 130 rings, containing two samples, spans the period AD 1330-1459. Neither sample has a heartwood/sapwood boundary ring but are estimated to have been felled AD 1437 and AD 1475 at the earliest. Tree-ring analysis of timbers at Stonepitts Manor has shown the period B mansion to be constructed from timbers of at least two fellings. It is thought it was built soon after the felling of timbers in AD 1553-73, but also incorporates timbers felled in AD 1497 from an earlier structure.
