METALLURGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE THETFORD SPEARHEAD (SFN 261).

Metal analysis has shown that the pattern welded spearhead of Anglo-Saxon type was manufactured from at least ten separate pieces of low phosporus iron. The pattern-welded effect was obtained by two pieces of iron plied together and welded to the surface of the spearhead at the base. The cutting edge was a slack quenched carbon steel
