THE ASSESSMENT OF SLAG AND OTHER METALWORKING DEBRIS FROM ELMS FARM, HEYBRIDGE, ESSEX 1994

Author(s): D Starley

This, predominantly Roman, settlement site produced c.200 kg of metalworking debris from iron smithing and non-ferrous metalworking. An important find was a 12.25 kg bun-shaped bloom of iron. Examination of the X-radiographs of the iron objects suggested that these included discarded bar ends and other waste iron fragments as well as some whole bar-shaped objects which may have formed part of the stock of a blacksmith. However, the limited quantity of debris on site and its location; in secondary dumped deposits, suggests, firstly, that metalworking was not a particularly important activity on the site, and secondly, that further examination of the debris would provide only limited further insight into this activity.
