Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Riding School, Bolsover Castle, Bolsover, Derbyshire

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

Thirty-four samples from the Riding School at Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire, were analysed by tree-ring dating. This analysis produced a single site chronology comprising 29 samples, this having 251 rings dated as spanning the period AD 1494 - AD 1744. Interpretation of the sapwood on the samples would indicate that while the stone structure itself dates to the AD 1630s, much of the present roof is a single phase, post Civil War, repair. The timbers of the Riding Arena and adjacent Forge room have an estimated felling date in the range AD 1664 - 82.
