PARASITOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS ON SOIL SAMPLES AND COPROLITES FROM COFFEE YARD, YORK.

Author(s): B Douglas, A K G Jones, C Nicholson

Soil and coprolite samples were examined for the presence of intestinal parasite eggs and other microfossils. Four contained the eggs of Trichuris, nematodes which are known to infest the human digestive tract. The concentrations of eggs were not sufficient to indicate that the sampled deposits were contaminated with large amounts of human faeces, but were typical of many urban ocupation layers. The coprolites are considered most likely to be of canine origin on the basis of their size and the nature of bone inclusions.
