ARCHAEOMAGNETIC STUDY OF A MEDIEVAL POTTERY KILN AT ST. MICHAEL'S TERRACE, SPRING HILL, LINCOLN

Author(s): M Noel

Excavations by the City of Lincoln Archaeology Unit at St. Michael's Terrace, Spring Hill, Lincoln, on behalf of V N Tapp builders uncovered a brick-built pottery kiln. Archaeomagnetic analysis of the kiln was undertaken by GeoQuest Associates to determine the date of its final firing. Unfortunately, despite the magnetisation of samples from the kiln being stable, it was not possible to date it magnetically. This may have been the result of distortion of the Earth's magnetic field by the kiln structure or rotation of the kiln due to soil movement.
