Measuring Moisture Content in Historic Building Materials

Author(s): Iain McCaig

This report presents some preliminary results from an ongoing programme of research to gain a better practical understanding of the limitations of various techniques for assessing moisture in historic building materials. This task has become more urgent as a changing climate increases the risk from flooding. The topics considered include: • variation in moisture distribution within historic brick walls. • how this variation may be overcome to provide a useful and repeatable moisture content approximation. • unfamiliar limitations of resistance moisture meters for wood.
