The Guesthouse, Blackfriars, St Peter's Lane, Canterbury. Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard

Dendrochronological analysis undertaken on ten samples from the roof of this building has resulted in the construction and dating of a single site sequence. This sequence, CBFASQ01, contains six samples and spans the period AD 1206–1350. Two of these samples have a felling date of AD 1350, with interpretation of the heartwood/sapwood boundary ring date of the other four suggesting these also having been felled at this time. Prior to this analysis being undertaken this roof had been thought to date to c AD 1320. However, it is now known to contain timbers felled in AD 1350, three decades later.
