TREE-RING DATING OF OAK PILES FROM WILTON HOUSE, WILTON, WILTSHIRE.

Author(s): J Hillam

Tree-ring analysis was carried out on samples from 23 oak piles from under the foundations of two wall lines in the south range of Wilton House. Historical evidence suggested that the likely date for the walls was between about AD1540 and 1636, but it was not known whether the two walls were contemporary. The tree-ring results indicated that they were, and that the timbers were felled in 1636, presumably during the rebuilding which was known to take place about that time. At least some of the timbers for the two walls had come from the same source, although each wall used timber from more than one source.
