A NOTE ON THE PETROLOGY OF SOME MEDIAEVAL FLOOR TILES FROM SHERBORNE ABBEY, DORSET

Author(s): D F Williams

Thin sectioning of a small group of Mediaeval floor-tiles produced a distinctive fabric containing glauconitic pellets. Given the frequency of glauconite present, the origin of the tiles may well be situated near to Greensand deposits, the nearest source of which is some 8 miles to the south. However, a source even further away is possible, as a 16th century tile from the Donyatt kilns was also found to contain glauconitic inclusions.
