Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Worden Old Hall, Euxton Lane, Chorley, Lancashire

Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge

This grade II* listed property on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register was thought to be of mid to late sixteenth-century origin. Dendrochronological analysis of the primary structure gives a likely felling date range for the timbers used of AD 1538-53, with some evidence that the actual felling date is at the earlier end of this range, possibly AD 1538. This is of interest in that it coincides with a change of ownership of the estate, and is a little earlier than dating based on stylistic considerations.
