AMPHORAE FROM WEST TENTER STREET, LONDON

Author(s): D F Williams

The amphorae consist mostly of bodysherds, many of which are fairly small, together with a few rims, handles and bases, and is classified by fabric and form. The proportions of the various forms have been assessed by sherd count in order to consider the material quantitati- vely. The classification of types is based on Dressel (1899), Pelichet(1946) and the Camulodonum Series (Hawkes and Hull, 1947) supplementedby descriptive forms suggested by Peacock (1971;1974). A small number of sherds are unassigned, under 5% of the total . The overwhelming majority of the sherds , some 90% , belong either to the Gallic wine amphora Pelichet 1947 or the Spanish Olive Oil amphora Dressel 20. Brief notes on the origins of and chronological span of the amphorae are attached.
