TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM THE MYNDE, MUCH DEWCHURCH, HEREFORDSHIRE

Author(s): Nigel Nayling

This report describes the results of dendrochronological analysis of samples taken from the ceiling trusses over the hall, first-floor timbers in the northern range, and relict roof trusses now located in partition walls in the kitchen range of a large and complex multi-period house known as the Mynde, situated to the west of Much Dewchurch. The house, a grade 1 listed building presently empty and listed as a building at risk, is undergoing major repairs. Timbers from the ceiling trusses were not dated, but felling dates from the first-floor timbers in the northern range indicated construction in, or soon after, the winter of AD 1619. The original roof trusses of the kitchen range were dated to AD 1615-35.
