TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM SCARGILL CASTLE GATEHOUSE, CASTLE FARM, CHAPEL LANE SCARGILL, NEAR BARNARD CASTLE, COUNTY DURHAM

Author(s): Robert Howard, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Seven samples from the available ground-floor ceiling timbers of the gatehouse at Scargill Castle were analysed by tree ring dating. This analysis produced a single site chronology of 109 rings spanning the period AD 1432 - AD 1540. Interpretation of the sapwood on the samples suggests that all the timbers used were cut in a single felling operation dated to some time between AD 1552 - 87.
