Forensic Micromorphology of the Crow Down Hoard

Author(s): Matt Canti

The Crow Down hoard consisted of a number of gold bands, some of which had soil embedded in their spiral structures. The hoard was claimed as found at Crow Down, near Lambourn, Oxfordshire and reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Some evidence that the objects might not have originated at Crow Down led to the decision to investigate the claim. This report furthers that investigation by comparing soil adhering to the disputed objects with soil from the location at which they were reportedly found. Although only a few grams of material was available from each object, micromorphology clearly showed that the embedded soil fragments are identical in all respects to the fabrics of the natural soil at Crow Down.
