Ivy Cottage, Main Street, Norwell, Nottinghamshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Robert Howard, Matt Hurford, Cathy Tyers

Analysis by dendrochronology was undertaken on four out of five samples taken from Ivy Cottage, Norwell. This resulted in the dating of two samples, NRW-F01 and F02. Sample NRW-F01 has an overall length of 114 rings, which can be dated as spanning the years AD 1350–1463, and NRW-F02 has an overall length of 99 rings, which can be dated as spanning the years AD 1374–1472. Interpretation of the sapwood and the heartwood/sapwood boundaries on the dated samples indicates that the north wall plate is derived from a tree with an estimated felling date range of AD 1478–1503. The south wall plate is derived from a tree felled in AD 1472. Two measured samples remain ungrouped and undated.
