LEICESTER, THE SHIRES 1988 EXCAVATIONS. THE ANIMALS BONES FROM THE ROMAN DEPOSITS AT LITTLE LANE.

Author(s): L J Gidney

The animal bones from Little Lane appear to be derived primarily from domestic rather than commercial refuse. In the hand-recovered collection cattle bones are most numerous followed by sheep/goat with pig remains least common. Remains of other species are infrequent but include horse, red deer, dog, cat, whale, fowl, goose, duck and raven. The pattern of slaughter suggests that mature beef was preferred. In contrast a large proportion of the sheep were neonatal lambs and the pigs were immature. The animal bones from the samples suggest that sheep/goat may be slightly under-represented in the hand recovered collection. The fine fractions and flots indicate the consistent presence of small mammals and the occurrence of smaller species of bird.
