THE ANIMAL BONES FROM THE 1978 EXCAVATIONS OF THE LATE IRON AGE AND EARLY ROMANO-BRITISH SETTLEMENT AT ABBOTSTONE DOWN, NEAR NEW ARLESFORD, HANTS.

Author(s): J M Maltby

The animal bones from this site excavated under the direction of R.Whinney were recovered mainly from enclosure ditches. The sample was relatively small and from a restricted area of the settlement. It was, however, quite well preserved, although many fragments bore evidence of gnawing. The sample bore similarities with other contemporary rural assemblages from Hants. but shows several differences with samples derived from Roman Winchester, particularly in species representation and butchery practices.
