Whitefriars Gate, 36 and 37 Much Park Street, Coventry, Warwickshire: Tree-ring Analysis of Oak Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on core samples obtained from ten timbers. This analysis produced a single site chronology comprising two samples of 81 rings. Although this site chronology could not be dated it would suggest that these two timbers from the roof are coeval. A single sample from a wall plate was successfully dated and, in the absence of any sapwood or the heartwood/sapwood boundary, has a felled after date of AD 1484. It is thus possible that this timber is associated with a pre-dissolution phase of building works. A total of seven samples remain both undated and ungrouped, all such samples having relatively few numbers of rings.
