TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM THE EAST BAY, LAUNDRY COTTAGE, IGHTHAM MOTE, IVY HATCH, KENT

Author(s): Robert Howard, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Samples from eleven timbers of the east bay of Laundry Cottage, Ightham Mote, were analysed by dendrochronology. This analysis produced a single site chronology consisting of three samples having 166 rings that span the period AD 1448 - AD 1613. Interpretation of the sapwood would indicate that the timbers represented have felling dates of AD 1612 and AD 1613. An additional single sample was also dated. This has 145 rings spanning the period AD 1372 - AD 1516. It is not possible to estimate the felling date of the timber represented because it does not have the heartwood/sapwood boundary; it is unlikely, however, to be before AD 1531. It thus appears probable that the roof and other parts of the east bay of Laundry Cottage consists largely of timbers felled in the early-seventeenth century.
