Analyses of waterlogged wood remains from Flag Fen Archaeology Park, Cambridgeshire

Author(s): Zoë Hazell, Rosie Lansley, Angela Middleton

In April 2017 sediment coring was undertaken at Flag Fen Archaeology Park, Peterborough in order to install dipwells to monitor water table conditions at the site. During fieldwork, samples of the organic materials were retained so that the character and condition of the preserved wood remains could be determined. This report focuses on the presentation of the results of these laboratory analyses: wood type, maximum moisture content, and FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy). As well as providing a comparison with extant condition data from the site, these new results provide an additional point-in-time baseline, to which any future analyses of recovered material can be compared.
