STONE FROM OLD WINDSOR, BERKSHIRE.

Author(s): D F Williams

Identification of a number of stones, mostly worked, from the Mediaeval layers on the site. Although some pieces were in all probability picked up quite close-by, the majority must have been imported from some distance away. Honestones are mostly Norwegian Ragstone, together with individual fragments of mudstone, pebbles, sandy limestone, sandstone and schist. Spindle-whorls are almost exclusively fine-grained limestone, possibly from the Bistol area. Quernstones are predominantly Mayen lava while a mortar was made of oolitic limestone (Jurassic). Miscellaneous fragments include sarsen, quartzite, chalk, ?Pennant sandstone, shelly limestone, greensand, malmstone, jet, ?fossil wood, chert and slate.
