Greater Manchester Urban Historic Landscape Characterisation

Author(s): Lesley Mitchell, Norman Redhead

The Greater Manchester Urban Historic Landscape Charactersation Project (GMUHLC) was carried out between July 2007 and March 2012 by the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit. GMAU is based at the University of Manchester and acts as an advisory body to the ten authorities of Greater Manchester. The project was carried out as part of the national characterisation programme coordinated by English Heritage. It was funded principally by English Heritage with contributions from the ten local authorities of Greater Manchester. At the end of the characterisation phase for each district, a report was produced summarising the key aspects of the character of that district. In addition, at the end of the project, a final report was produced which gives a detailed account of the methodology and showcases some of the ways in which the data can be used.
