Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Church of St Nicholas, Willingale Road, Fyfield, Essex

Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge

The two sets of dated timbers from the tower clearly represent two phases of felling. One group of three timbers, probably representing a single tree, was most likely felled in the period AD 1487 - 1519, and this may represent the date of construction, or a repair phase of a previous tower. A second group, of just two timbers, was most likely felled in the period AD 1572 - 86. It is thought that this may represent the date of the rebuild of the present tower, stylistically dated to around AD 1600, which incorporated some timbers from an earlier structure. Four timbers from the roof of the north aisle, and a tie beam from the nave matched each other and appear to form a single group of timbers most likely felled in the period AD 1344-73. Two timbers from the north porch failed to date.
