Tree-Ring Analysis of Conifer Timbers from 107 Jermyn Street, City of Westminster, London

Author(s): C Groves, Christine Locatelli

An English Heritage funded research project is currently investigating the viability of dendrochronological analysis of conifer timbers imported into England. The demolition of the buildings at 107 Jermyn Street led to the principal building fronting onto Jermyn Street being incorporated into this research project. Twenty-three pine timbers associated with the floor frames from the second and third floors and the horizontal roof-frame were dated. The likely source of the various groups of timbers ranges east from Norway across to the shores of the White Sea. Felling phases in the late-seventeenth, early-eighteenth, and early-twentieth centuries were identified. A further phase of felling probably occurred sometime during the mid eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century. The analysis implies that the building either existed as a shell for about 40 years or that it required comprehensive reconstruction of the interior only 40 years after the initial erection.
