ROMAN AMPHORAE FROM THE 1986 EXCAVATIONS AT ST. JOHN'S LANE, CANTERBURY, KENT.
Author(s): D F Williams
Examination of over 500 amphorae sherds resulted in the identification of the following types: Dressel 1B, Dressel 2-4, Dressel 20, Pelichet 47, Camulodunum 185A, Camulodunum 186sp, Hollow Foot and North African cylindricals. The majority of the sherds belonged to the southern Spanish olive-oil form Dressel 20, most of which no doubt arrived well after the Roman Conquest. Of more interest are the finds of the Italian wine amphora Dressel 1, which probably arrived in the country before the turn of the first century B.C.
