PIPE ASTON, LUDLOW, HEREFORDSHIRE, ARCHAEOMAGNETIC DATING REPORT, 2000

Author(s): Paul Linford

Excavations by Dr Allan Peacey at Pipe Aston in Herefordshire uncovered the remains of two clay pipe making kilns likely to have been in use during the 18th century AD. These were sampled for archaeomagnetic analysis to assist in establishing a chronology for the site. Despite having to reject a number of samples for both kilns owing to anomalous directions of thermoremanent magnetisation, dates ranges were obtained. The Last firing of kiln 1PA was dated to 1721 to 1774 cal AD and of 2PA to 1714 to 1768 cal AD.
