South-West Portico Roof and Bell Tower, Peterborough Cathedral, Cambridgeshire: Dendrochronological Analysis of Oak Timbers

Author(s): Ian Tyers

A tree-ring dating programme was commissioned on timbers from several areas of Peterborough Cathedral. The results identified that timbers in the ringing chamber ceiling and an area of roof on the west front were datable by tree-ring dating techniques, with these areas using timbers felled during the mid-thirteenth century and the later fourteenth or early fifteenth centuries respectively. This dating programme was commissioned to exploit scaffolding access during grant-aided repairs. This report archives the dendrochronological results.
