TREE-RING DATING OF OAK SAMPLES FROM THE WEST WING OF GAINSBOROUGH OLD HALL.

Author(s): Robert Howard

Ten (and possibly twelve) of the 24 samples taken from the West Wing have together an estimated felling date inthe 1470s. Since these formed the bulk of the dated samples and were taken from a wide range of locations this must represent an estimated building date for the Wing as a whole. A further two samples, taken from stud infilling have anestimated felling date a little after 1560. The date ofthe last ring of one sample is 1877 though, since it contained no sapwood, no more precise estimate of its felling date can be given.
